Orvis Team Rutland

Orvis Team Rutland makes it ‘two out of two’ …

ORVIS Team Rutland won their first two opening matches of the 2006 flyfishing competition campaign by taking first place in the  Midlands heat of the Anglian Water / Fulling Mill competition and following it up three days later with top spot at the 2006 Lexus European Flyfishing Championships, both events held on mighty Rutland Water.

The first success for the Rutland-based team, which is being sponsored by Orvis for the first time this season, came in the AW/Fulling Mill event on a wild and windy Rutland Water on May 24, when the six man team took 26 trout to the scales weighing a total of 56lb 10oz for first place.

Best fish of the match, a fin-perfect 5lb 1/2oz rainbow was taken by Orvis Team Rutland member, Mike Gunnell, while skipper Sean Cutting claimed first place and top bag in the competition with seven fish for 15lb 7oz, both catches taken on floating lines and nymphs, using the team's new Orvis Western2 10ft 7wt rods.

The second success followed on May 27th in still more impressive style, when the Orvis Rutland Team claimed top spot in the 96-angler, 16-team Lexus Competition with 43 fish for 96lb 0oz. This was over 4lbs clear of second-placed Greenwell Persuaders who had 38 fish for 91lb 13oz and third-placed ACA Masterline with 46 fish for 87lb 12oz.

Top rod for Orvis Team Rutland, and second overall individual, was David Lang with 8 fish plus time bonus for 22lb 5 oz, followed by Mike Gunnell with 7 fish for 18lb 10oz and Sean Cutting with 8 fish for 16lb 14oz. The team again used Orvis Western2 rods coupled with floating lines and nymphs and buzzers to claim their second success in the space of three days.

Afterwards Captain Sean Cutting said: "This was a fantastic way to start the new flyfishing competition season with our new sponsor Orvis and with two wins out of two we are going to be hard-pushed to carry on at this rate of success! However, with the new Orvis Western2 rod, and other Orvis equipment in our armoury, we feel that we are more than capable of holding our own against any team."
