Orvis Event day at the Press Manor Fishery in Derbyshire

A rare break in the poor weather saw the gods smiling on Derbyshire’s Press Manor Fishery for the first of what is hoped to be many Orvis fly-fishing events held in conjunction with the Bakewell Retail Store.

The free event was open to the public, and offered the perfect opportunity for every angler from the new-comer to the experienced to listen to and watch some of the top fly fishermen and fly tiers in the country demonstrating their skills.

Along with a host of experts were some of the organisations that champion the interests of anglers which included: The Wild Trout Trust, The Grayling Society, The Salmon and Trout Association, Fly Dressers Guild and the Izzack Walton Cottage Charity.

Many of the latest offerings from Orvis where on show, including the new high-tech Helios rod range for people to have a cast with. Several casting competitions took place for women, juniors, and men with prizes being awarded to the eventual victors.

Large crowds where present for all of the casting and fishing demonstrations which included such names as Paul Procter, Phillip White, Bernie Mayher, Jonathan Tomlinson, and Charles Jardine.

Event organiser Jonathan Tomlinson reflected on the popularity of the day by saying “I’m over the moon, a lot of time and effort went into making this day happen and I’m thrilled with how well it has been received!”

Brian Clarke of the Grayling Society had this to say on the matter, “what a great show, very well organised and an excellent turn out it’s been a really enjoyable day with a lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I hope it will run again next year and if it does then we will definitely want to be a part of it!”
