Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaced a near perfect 5 year old Barbour Paint spilled on the old one. I've owned several waxed coats over the years, but this is the best. It's the most durable, and one of the few with the rear "poacher's pocket." Useful not just in the field, but as a travel jacket, the pocket provides a place to carry larger things like guides and collapsible umbrellas. Also, Barbour has a U.S. shop to rewax or repair. I take this coat everywhere but the tropics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 20+ years and I still love this jacket! This is a classic waxed field coat. I really have been wearing mine for 20+ years and will someday pass it on to one of my sons who borrow it if I'm not looking. Buy the liner, it lets you wear what will be your favorite jacket in the cold.. I wear it out to dinner, out to get firewood in the snow, and out to go fishing. This jacket will also keep you absolutely dry in the pouring rain, and protects you from the wind. I love this jacket,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best you can get What can I say that has not already been said? This is a very well-made, fashionable, practical, and comfortable jacket. With a fresh wax coating, it's virtually waterproof; with a sweater or liner added, you can wear it all winter (at least you can in the South); it holds shotgun shells, birds, gloves, hats, wallets, and the occasional bottle of bourbon all with equal aplomb; and it always looks fine. I highly recommend this jacket. It may seem like a lot of money at first, but like a nice pair of boots or a fine shotgun, there is definitely a difference between it and similar looking, but cheaper products. This is the original--don't settle for anything less. Take good are of it and it will last a lifetime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Peerless And oh so British! Construction and function are excellent. Fit is too generous for me, but most clothes fit that category.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great jacket - could be warmer I've had the jacket a year now; live in Connecticut. It's not the arctic, but it gets plenty cold here. This is a really nice jacket; handsome & very well made. It is easy to clean, fits true to size (I am 5-10, 215 stocky solid pounds & bought the 46) with plenty of room if you layer or have on thick flannel type shirts. My beef isn't really with the coat - it's warm enough to the mid 30's to 40's - which seems to be its purpose. Add the liner & the hood and your torso & noggin are comfortable - which generally means, you're warm overall. Except for your arms - especially if it's windy. Temps below the 30's, your arms feel the cold & wind chill. While a midweight jacket works (which is what I use) it can't be zipped in to remain attached. If Barbour would make a long-sleeve liner for this coat that zips in - this could be perfect early spring, fall & true winter coat!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great jacket but not warm I have loved this jacket but it was not very warm and I ordered a zip in liner, and a hood. the liner zipped in but zippers keep falling and hood snaps are poor holding. Keep hood in back pouch unless wearing or you will loose it . The liner is not worth the trouble it is difficult to put on the jacket when the vest style liner is in. They should have made a sleeved version. your better off just wearing a long sleeved sweater under the jacket

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the storm of Jan 2016 I picked up this jacket after the first of the year for a trip back east. It was perfect for the conditions I experienced during the trip from heavy rain in CA to nasty snow in PA! It handled all conditions extremely well, not too hot in CA and perfect with a light layer for the cold snowy conditions in PA. The Beaufort was also perfect for the casual dress, as well business for the trip east. The simple care makes it a great travel jacket!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Jacket Great Jacket. Fits well. Quite warm, even without the liner. It's a little tricky getting the zipper to connect and start zipping, but it probably just takes getting used to it. Good investment piece! Another Orvis winner!!!

Size Charts for Men's Clothing

Since 1894, J. Barbour & Sons have produced clothes perfectly suited to life in the country. Their quality, durable clothing is cut for an active lifestyle and the fit varies according to each garment's design and purpose.

The sizing of Barbour’s clothing is divided into four segments:

  • Heritage: slightly fitted, vintage cut
  • Contemporary: A slim—but not fitted—cut
  • Sporting: an active cut for comfort in the field
  • Classic: traditional, fuller cut

In the case of Barbour outerwear, sizing takes into account the appropriate layers beneath. That means you do not need to order a size up for a comfortable fit.

Not sure what size to order? Just chat, e-mail, or call our Customer Service experts toll free at 0333 400 4177. They’ll be happy to give you the actual garment measurements for any item we sell.

Repair & Care

Reproofing Your Barbour Waxed Cotton Jacket

The Barbour Sporting Classic Beaufort Jacket
The Barbour Sporting Classic Beaufort Jacket: A jacket that will last for years — even decades — with yearly reproofing.

Your Barbour Jacket — A Great Value that Lasts for Years

With regular reproofing your waxed cotton Barbour jacket will remain waterproof through many years of faithful wear—Barbour receives vintage jackets of thirty, forty, even fifty years of service for reproofing and repair.

Reproofing: the Process that Preserves the Outstanding Quality of Your Jacket

Waxed cotton is made waterproof by impregnating the cotton fabric with a wax specially formulated for the maximum water-resistant qualities. Also called oiling, waxing, redressing, or waterproofing, reproofing is the process of re-applying the wax to keep your jacket fully waterproof and wind resistant. Reproofing helps to protect your favourite jacket from severe elements while rejuvenating and restoring the garment, thus prolonging its years of effectiveness.

Yearly Reproofing Is Best

It’s best to reproof your jacket yearly, especially if you subject it to robust use in the field, where regular conditions include heavy weather, mud, and abrasion. Garments should be cleaned with cold or lukewarm water to remove any mud or debris before being brought in for reproofing. Simply hose down or rinse in a shower, using a soft brush to remove any mud or debris.

How to Submit Your Jacket to Barbour for Reproofing

We highly recommend that you bring your Barbour jacket in to your local Orvis store when it needs repair or treatment. Our retail associates will be happy to take down your information and send your jacket off to Barbour’s UK headquarters for reproofing.

Find your Orvis store here

If you don’t have an Orvis store near you, the Barbour website has a form for requesting reproofing as well. For more information, please visit: Barbour Repairs & Reproofing.
