    Great Warm Jacket - 11/14/2014
    By:

Was torn between this jacket and the sapper. I find the old-school Barbour jackets stuffy-looking and too traditional. Everything everyone has said about sizing is spot-on: this jacket runs small. Barbour sizes in general are insanely inconsistent -- I'm a perfect Large in the Sapper and an XL in the Ogston. At 6'2", 180lbs with very long arms (37") the Ogston fits me perfectly. Even, fortunately, in the arms (which are notoriously short with Barbour jackets, creating a big market for sleeve lengthening). The non-removable liner detracts from the jacket (hence my 4-star review) but the heavier 8oz waxed cotton and the liner will no doubt make the jacket far, far more reliable in colder weather. I've worn it in 60 degree weather (with light shirt underneath) and 38 degree weather (with two layers). Look forward to testing it under 30 (likely with a heavy sweater and a capilene undershirt). The jacket also looks great -- a nice middle ground between the stuffy, faux-Southern Bedale and the very un-Barbour Sapper.

    Ogston Jacket - 11/9/2014
    By: from Shennandoah Valley

If you hadn't figured by now, this jacket runs small. I am 6'4", 220lbs and a xxl fits me fine. I don't wear xxl in anything else but that size gives me enough sleeve length and enough room for a sweater underneath. The quality of the jacket is usual Barbour standard, top-notch. I would never have had the patience to buy this one online, fortunately I was in the UK a few months ago and able to try one on for size. Very happy with my purchase but surprised with the sizing...

    Barbour is Barbour - 11/1/2014
    By: from Montevideo, Uruguay

Thanks to the reviews i did not buy it on line, I patiently waited and arrived in N.Y. and went in to Orvis store. My normal size should be a Large, definitely too small. I ended trying a Double XXL witch fitted perfectly!!! Its a very nice jacket witch called the attention of some friends. It just feels great and with an elegant touch !!!

NO STARS FOR BARBOUR - 10/21/2014
    By: from Maryland

Ordered a Barbour Ogston and an Orvis Field Jacket. I am keeping the Orvis and returning the Barbour which is over twice the price of the Orvis. The Ogston, ordered in XL, is actually a Medium and I could barely zip it up, much less wear a sweater beneath it. A bit shocking, actually. I'm sending it back and keeping the Orvis Field Jacket which is far better looking and just as warm. And it FITS!!

    Needs a better description - 9/30/2014
    By: from Boston MA

This is , of course, a beautiful jacket. I was bummed to send the one I bought back but the description said or led you to believe the liner comes out as the "day warms up". Well it doesn't and this jacket is one I would hope to wear 3 out of 4 seasons. Sharp looking jacket, the med was too tight and I sent it back for a large and then noticed the liner could not come out when I received the large

    Very tight fit! - 9/25/2014
    By: from Pennsylvania, USA

Very nice jacket, however, the jacket is very small/snug for the size. I'm 5'7" 165 pounds athletic build, broad upper body but had to send back the medium as it was very tight on my upper arms while wearing a tee shirt. Swapped for a large and it's a little better but can't imagine wearing a bulky shirt or sweater underneath. A bit disappointing, I first thought it was a woman's jacket. The other thing I don't like is the sleeve lining, it's very plastic feeling not like other barbour I have (bedale). It's kind of noisy. It is well made and I like it but not sure if I'll keep it.

Size Charts for Men's Clothing

Since 1894, J. Barbour & Sons have produced clothes perfectly suited to life in the country. Their quality, durable clothing is cut for an active lifestyle and the fit varies according to each garment's design and purpose.

The sizing of Barbour’s clothing is divided into four segments:

  • Heritage: slightly fitted, vintage cut
  • Contemporary: A slim—but not fitted—cut
  • Sporting: an active cut for comfort in the field
  • Classic: traditional, fuller cut

In the case of Barbour outerwear, sizing takes into account the appropriate layers beneath. That means you do not need to order a size up for a comfortable fit.

Barbour

Since 1894, J. Barbour & Sons have produced clothes perfectly suited to enjoyment of life beyond the city. It is this commitment to quality and durability that has seen the name Barbour become synonymous with the best of country living.

The beginning of Barbour jackets

In 1894 John Barbour established himself in the burgeoning port of South Shields, supplying oilskins and other garments to protect the growing community of sailors, fishermen, rivermen and dockers from the worst of the North Sea weather.

Within a few years the firm became the leading supplier of oilskins on the north east coast, not only to seafarers but to others in the surrounding country - farmers, labourers, carters, shepherds - who earned their living outdoors in all weathers. By the beginning of the next century Barbour’s durable Beacon oilskins were well known throughout Britain and beyond.

The legendary durability of Barbour jackets

If there’s one feature that distinguishes Barbour jackets more than any other, it is their legendary durability. But, given the quality of materials used—genuine long-staple Egyptian cotton, solid brass studs, substantial metal zips, plus painstaking quality of construction with an average of 15,000 stitches and up to two hundred components—perhaps it’s hardly surprising.

The seams in a Barbour oiled cotton jacket are double rolled, each stitched through two thicknesses of fabric. It is an intricate part of the manufacture and it ensures that the seams are completely waterproof. Even the thread is treated with the same secret watertight proofing formula as the fabric itself.

How long a Barbour jacket will last very much depends on its use (or rather abuse in many cases). Undoubtedly, owners expect much more of a Barbour than any other garment because Barbour enables them to do more. They will subject themselves and their jackets to the severest conditions of weather, mud, animal contact and abrasion than they could ever contemplate if wearing anything less robust.
