    Finally... - 1/14/2015

Found a coat versatile enough to get me through the cold and wet seasons - for business or everyday needs. Which makes it the one right coat to take along during business travel. Very comfortable through the recent artic vortex invasion in NYC! And it fits comfortably over the Barbour Chelsea for those colder days.

Just got my coat and it is a rainy day. I had to wear it, what a great feel and fit to this jacket. I know it will hold up to warmer and colder weather alike. As usual I ordered a size bigger as Barbour runs a little small. Highly recommend this jacket.

    A functional & breathable Barbour jacket. - 12/2/2014
    By:

In the past, I found the traditional waxed cotton Barbours were simply not breathable enough for anything other than completely sedentary activities. When I saw this jacket with a Poly/Cotton blend shell, I decided to give it a try. It has more than met my expectations. Now I can have a traditional Barbour styled coat with the modern convenience of a DWR finished breathable jacket. Oh, and I can throw it in the washing machine when it gets all mucked up. You cannot do that with a waxed cotton jacket. This jacket offers moderate insulation comfortable to wear up into the mid-50s. I have not yet had a chance to see how cold it could go but so far it has done well into the low 20's without any additional layering. Regarding the fit - it is somewhere between the more tailored modern Barbour jackets and the overly generous cut of the Beaufort and Bedale. At 5'11" and 185 lbs, I wear a large in most shirts and jackets and the large in this coat fit me perfectly with just enough room for a mid-weight sweater or fleece underneath. The main benefit here is the shell fabric. I tested it under a faucet and water rolled off it completely. While I expect that the DWR finish will need to be refreshed at some point, this is much easier to do than rewaxing an old waxed cotton shell. It does not have a membrane like Gore-Tex but this is not the purpose for such a jacket. Finally, the breathability benefits cannot be overstated. I felt a clammy dampness setting in anytime I tried to do anything more active than a slow walk in a waxed cotton jacket. I needed something that would let me be as active as I needed to be, but not get clammy underneath the coat. This fits the bill perfectly.

Coat was to small. Sizing was bad. This isn't the first time I experienced this problem.

Size Charts for Men's Clothing

Since 1894, J. Barbour & Sons have produced clothes perfectly suited to life in the country. Their quality, durable clothing is cut for an active lifestyle and the fit varies according to each garment's design and purpose.

The sizing of Barbour’s clothing is divided into four segments:

  • Heritage: slightly fitted, vintage cut
  • Contemporary: A slim—but not fitted—cut
  • Sporting: an active cut for comfort in the field
  • Classic: traditional, fuller cut

In the case of Barbour outerwear, sizing takes into account the appropriate layers beneath. That means you do not need to order a size up for a comfortable fit.

Barbour

Since 1894, J. Barbour & Sons have produced clothes perfectly suited to enjoyment of life beyond the city. It is this commitment to quality and durability that has seen the name Barbour become synonymous with the best of country living.

The beginning of Barbour jackets

In 1894 John Barbour established himself in the burgeoning port of South Shields, supplying oilskins and other garments to protect the growing community of sailors, fishermen, rivermen and dockers from the worst of the North Sea weather.

Within a few years the firm became the leading supplier of oilskins on the north east coast, not only to seafarers but to others in the surrounding country - farmers, labourers, carters, shepherds - who earned their living outdoors in all weathers. By the beginning of the next century Barbour’s durable Beacon oilskins were well known throughout Britain and beyond.

The legendary durability of Barbour jackets

If there’s one feature that distinguishes Barbour jackets more than any other, it is their legendary durability. But, given the quality of materials used—genuine long-staple Egyptian cotton, solid brass studs, substantial metal zips, plus painstaking quality of construction with an average of 15,000 stitches and up to two hundred components—perhaps it’s hardly surprising.

The seams in a Barbour oiled cotton jacket are double rolled, each stitched through two thicknesses of fabric. It is an intricate part of the manufacture and it ensures that the seams are completely waterproof. Even the thread is treated with the same secret watertight proofing formula as the fabric itself.

How long a Barbour jacket will last very much depends on its use (or rather abuse in many cases). Undoubtedly, owners expect much more of a Barbour than any other garment because Barbour enables them to do more. They will subject themselves and their jackets to the severest conditions of weather, mud, animal contact and abrasion than they could ever contemplate if wearing anything less robust.
