The Orvis Commitment
Salmon & Trout Association
Orvis Supports Salmon & Trout Association’s Chalkstream Initiative.
The Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA) has been concerned about the high level of phosphate pollution in England’s classic chalkstreams. Many suspect watercress farming as being a significant pollutant source in some rivers, but have struggled to prove the point.
Last year, as a result of the generous support of Orvis Inc. and others, the S&TA was able to purchase water samplers and strategically place them on the upper reaches of the iconic River Itchen. Daily samples were analysed for phosphates by Southampton University, which, as feared, revealed some alarming “spikes” and highlighted the inadequacy of official monitoring, which is taken just once a month.
S&TA presented this data to the Environment Agency, and the report acted as a catalyst for new phosphate standards to be incorporated in the discharges of all watercress and trout farms in the Upper Itchen. These were imposed in April 2014 - a tremendous result and a very welcome first step in restoring the water quality of this internationally important chalkstream, and in setting a precedent for other rivers.
S&TA is now progressing plans to collect data on the other chalkstream stressors – septic tank overflows, agricultural, industrial and domestic pollution, and heavy metals. With sound scientific evidence of these impacts and their sources, we can build on our success with phosphates and influence a wide-ranging cleanup operation on the Itchen. These efforts can then be replicated across all other chalkstreams so that they are properly protected, as they deserve, for future generations.
