The 9-foot, 4-weight fly rod can stake its claim as history's ultimate trout rod, and our 904-4 Clearwater only furthers its cause. Those few extra inches provide all the line control, mending ability, and casting power you'll need in order to fish from a driftboat or battle the wind. Cast full-bodied dry flies or indicator rigs with accuracy and grace, then guide them through a drag-free drift with ease. The Clearwater 904-4 should be a standard part of any trout angler's collection.

great rod at reasonable price -

I bought this rod to serve as a back up to my Helios2. I was very pleased with its performance and feel as I landed 3 nice rainbows in the first hour of fishing. My only suggestion would be to have the rod pieces marked with a dot on each piece to aid in alignment when putting the 4 pieces together. Otherwise very pleased.
Great rod for the price -
Bought this rod to replace a cortland rod that I broke. I've been extremely pleased with this purchase and would recommend this rod to anyone who is looking for a quality rod that won't break the bank.
Short shelf life -

Bought the 9' 4 wt in May and fished it maybe 6 times. My first Orvis rod. Seemed to be a good rod, right up until it snapped in half right in the middle of the river, in full view of my guide! No abuse. No car doors. (A nice 16" wild brown on the cast before though.) I heard all about the advantages of the 25-year guarantee when I was buying it but I thought I would make it past the 2 month stage before I'd have to take advantage of it. So now I am down another $30 (shipping) and without a rod for the remainder of the trout season (3-4 weeks from factory) and 2 cross-border trips to take care of all this. So, to sum it up, I have been disappointed.
Streams & Tailwaters -

I've used this rod to catch the smallest of brook in mountain streams to the +20" roaming the tailwaters. The only negative I have is the line doesn't run as smooth as I would like. I still manage 60' casts.
Great rod for the price -

After fishing with several rods that claimed to be just as good as some of the rods in this price point, I returned a rod I bought that was the same weight line and length to purchase this rod. For only fly fishing for about a year, I can say that I LOVE this rod for dries, and some nymphing too. I would have gotten a 10 ft if I wanted a dedicated nymph rod. I love my clearwater and paired up with the Battenkill reel, this is a combo that is near impossible to beat at this price point. The flex on this is a medium/fast progressive action, which I really like. Some of my fishing buddies found this to be the best rod they've casted, as I watched my neighbor(a less experienced fly fisherman) cast this rod at least 60 feet. His comment was "whoa, this beats em all in this price category."
Clearwater rod experience -

I recently added this 4 weight rod to my collection of Orvis rods in advance of trip to Spring Creek, PA. The rod easily loaded and transferred energy to the Hydros fly line beautifully in very tight fishing conditions. Often target zones for fly placement were the size of a small dinner plate in order to allow the midge flies to drift under branches that almost touched the water. Overall exceptionally well balanced value rod with strong core for fighting 8 inch rainbow trout to 21 inch fat browns in fast moving water to backwater eddies. Can’t wait to get back on the water with this rod. Well done again Orvis
