Good Bass Fly Rod -
Has the backbone and action necessary for big heavy bass bugs and large streamers. Casts well and is able to turn a fishes head away from thick cover. A solid bass rod, but too stiff for crappie / bream / etc. A rod for larger harder fighting fish. Minus one star for the lack of a guide for holding the lure when switching rods, which requires either putting the hook in the cork or securing it to the stripper guide.
10' 8 wt Clearwater Rod/Reel -
By: FisherGreen from NW Montana in San Jose, Ca
I am a NW Montana 5-6 wt river/stream fly fisherman with no ocean fly fishing experience. I had a necessary "non-fun" trip to Northern California. I decided to enjoy some evening fly fishing during this trip in the Northern Cal Pacific Waters (above Frisco). I contacted the San Jose, Ca Store to get set up after researching the Clearwater Combo. Nathan (Manager) received my phone call and helpfully guided me into the 10' 8 Wt Clearwater Combo and set it aside for me upon my arrival. Upon my arrival at the San Jose Orvis Store, employee Edward greeted me and then set up the Clearwater for me. He further assisted me in selecting some basic ocean flies and helped me get dialed in with leaders and tippet rigs. Edward offered some of the best customer service that I have ever received. Thank you. The 10 Footer casted with authority. The reel functioned well and did a great job holding and retrieving the line. The location that I was at was dangerous to cast into. Powerful waves came in sets and hindered my casting options and threatened to sweep me and the Clearwater Combo off the rocks. However, I was able to get some hits during lulls in the powerful wave sets. The rod responded with excitement. I am actually glad that a fish did not hook up because I do not think that I could have landed it due to extreme hazards. Just casting the Clearwater and getting a couple hits was satisfying enough for me. I have a trip to Seattle, Wa tomorrow and the Clearwater will be traveling with. Hopefully, I will get to land some fish this time. I will be visiting the Bellevue, Wa Store. Thank you Orvis.
Great road for the price -

This is a great rod for the price. I use this for steelhead fishing with a strike indicator. Only suggestion for improvement is the quality of the cork handle. The cork has a lot of defects that are filled with some material that after a while shrinks and falls out making gripping it unpleasant.
Great Combo -

Great combo. Bought for MD stripers and NB Atlantic salmon. Used on 3-day salmon trip... casted very well... no fish hooked so I can't speak to the live action. Had a bad cork handle which Orvis replaced very quickly. Great company... great gear. Thanks Orvis.

Now having tried this rod several I have no hesitation to give 9/10 it handles the lines very well and no major effort required putting a good distance of line out, fights a fish and you are completely in control. Being a 4 piece fits nicely in boot or as a spare in the boat, and compliments all my other fishing gear, my only moan is this rod has NO hook eye when not in use.
So far so good! -
Bought this long rod mostly for small mouth fishing from my Outlaw Rampage. It casts about like I expected. Does not bottom out when casting large weighted flies but has a soft tip that allows you to feel the cast. I'm fairly picky about gear but did not want to spend a fortune on this rod. I think I got very good value for the price and I'm quite satisfied.
It works..... -
No fish caught as yet. But it casts well. Line pick up is a sinch. Back on the river soon!
Just Keeps Getting Better -

I updated from my 5 year old Clearwater to this year's model and like the title says...it just keeps getting better. I fished the rod long hours every day for 6 days on the Gaspe area Atlantic salmon rivers, and the rod performed flawlessly, including landing a 12 pounder in about 10 quick minutes. GREAT buy for the money!!!!

What an excellent rod for the price. I bought this rod as a backup for steelhead. Only had a chance to use it twice so far on the tribs of Lake Erie for Steelhead. It casts great and handles great. The rod preformed excellent landing three 8+ pound Steelheads.
