Okay, I know it was a lot of money, and I thought about it for a long time before making my purchase of this book. However, I'm glad that I did. I believe in the long run, I will spend less on reference material. I would recommend it.

It is not only the Benchside reference it is the benchmark of books describing tying methods. It is the best out there, but if you want to learn to tie flies the books of Charlie Craven (also offered by ORVIS) are a better choice. A must have for every fly tier who wants to learn a specific method regardless how difficult it would be to source the procedure outside of this book. It must have taken several life times of knowledge to write this book. Kudos to both authors.

New techniques as well as old ones -

I started tying flies at an early age, did more when I was in college and worked in fly shops tying flies for customers, and then I stopped for several years. When I got back into it, there were several new developments such as the wide spread use of bead head nymph patterns. When I found this manual it was a great help at learning some of the newer techniques as well as remembering a few older ones. This is a fantastic book with detailed descriptions and color photos-very heavy book. I have seen no other book that comes close to containing all of the techniques presented here. Well worth the price to anyone serious about tying flies.
