Marianne Quilt

Our country-style quilt is reversible for two rustic quilt patterns in one.

A classic paisley design is enhanced by a bright border with a paisley motif reproduced from an antique French scarf. Disappointment - 4/14/2014

Ordered this quilt in the Royal and like the colors. Would have given it five stars if it fit. The full/queen size did not cover a queen size bed. Exchanged it for the king size which fit either in width or in length on a queen size bed depending on how it is placed, but not both. Very disappointing.

as good as it looks - 4/11/2014

This quilt has proven just as nice as it looks in the catalog. I love that it's double-sided. Just the right weight for spring.

    Not a quilt - 4/9/2014

I bought this because the colors were great. It is advertised as a quilt which in the least of terms it could be called that. It is printed fabric that is quilted. I was expecting a pieced top that has been quilted. Hence the true definition of a quilt. One washing and it faded a little. Would not recommend this if you want a real quilt.

    Beautiful - 3/25/2014
    By: from Shelbyville, KY

This is a beautiful quilt. The quality is great, and the colors are lovely (just as pictured on my computer). And, I thought the price was very reasonable. I am expecting an out-of-town guest soon, and I will be proud to have it on her bed.

    Spring bedspread - 3/24/2014
    By: from Philadelphia, PA

I love the vibrant colors and the weight of the quilted bedspread. My only request would be for king-size shams for the king-size bed. The regular shams are just too small.

    Really pretty - 3/24/2014

Im very happy with the Marianne quilt. The colors are accurately displayed in the catalog picture, and it is a good year round weight. I love the shams, too.

Too Small for Queen - 2/9/2014
    By: from California

The one size fits all for Queens and Doubles really doesn't work for this quilt. Much too little drop for a queen especially if your mattress is deep. Returned.

    Catalogue color differed. - 1/23/2014
    By: from Seattle, WA

I fell in love with the color in the photo which I perceived was different from its true color of very red. Good quality but color did not work for me.

    Looks great - 1/22/2014
    By: from Chapin, SC

This quilt is beautiful in my bedroom and the king is a good fit, I could only get standard shams and will probably order another for a more complete look. I am very happy with the quality and quick service.

The Tradition of the Quilt

Provence QuiltToday they hang as masterpieces of art in prestigious museums such as the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Quilts are revered the world over for their composition, creativity, and color.

The Origins of "Quilt"

A quilt, by definition, is simply two layers of cloth stitched together with a soft filling. Though mainly known today as bedcoverings, the word quilt is thought to come from the Latin culcita, meaning literally a "stuffed sack," or mattress.

The Early History of Quilts

Quilts may have made their way to Europe on the return trips of the Crusaders. But whatever their route, by the 17th century quilted clothing and quilted bedcovers had become popular in Europe and the tradition naturally immigrated to America. It was there that the tradition of quilting was raised to an art form with the quilting explosion of the mid 1800s. Perhaps no group of quilters epitomized the quilting revolution more than Amish.

The Amish and Quilting

Considering their separatist nature, it is not surprising that most Amish came to quilting later than other American women. But what we may find surprising is that this conservative group pioneered the use of vibrant, sometimes shocking color combinations. And it was the Amish, when quilting waned in the years following World War II, who helped keep the tradition alive. Quilting fit quite naturally into the Amish lifestyle—self sufficient, family-oriented, and skillful handwork. It was an occasion for Amish women to gather together, work as a community, and pass on their traditions.

The style of their quilts naturally followed the style of their clothing, combining somber and drab colors with more vivid ones. This juxtaposition of colors, especially when played out in simple geometric designs, created quilts of amazing energy.

Because they approach change gradually, Amish quilters have helped keep alive some of America’s most beloved and traditional patterns, including Sunshine and Shadow, Around the World, Diamond in the Square, and the multi-hued Roman Stripe.
