Sizing Information for Orvis Women's Clothing

Orvis women's clothes are cut generously to accommodate the active, country lifestyle. In addition, we build plenty of “wearing ease” in all our garments to ensure you will enjoy them for many years. We field-test all our clothes on Orvis associates, and we take into consideration how the clothing will be worn. For example, when we fit women's outerwear, we always size it with the appropriate layers beneath. That means you do not need to order a size up for a comfortable fit.

Not sure what size to order? Just chat, e-mail, or call 0870 066 4188 to reach our Customer Service experts. They will be happy to give you the actual garment measurements for any item we sell.

How to Measure

Women's SizingIn all instances, hold tape firm and level, but not tight.
a. Hat Sizes: Using a flexible/soft tape measure, start 1" above the ear. Follow around head, staying 1" above the ear. This will give your most accurate reading. Then refer to the chart for size.

b. Bust/Chest: Wrap a tape measure evenly around the fullest part under your arms.

c. Waist: Wrap a tape around your natural waistline, or where you actually wear your trousers.

d. Seat/Hip: Standing with your feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hip (approx. 7-8" below the waist). Don’t forget to keep the tape level.

e. Inseam: Best taken from an existing pair of trousers you like. Measure along the garment inseam from the crotch seam to the hem.

f. Glove Hand: Measure all the way around the flat part of your hand, excluding the thumb, and around the widest part at the knuckles. Refer to sizing on product page to convert this measurement in inches to your corresponding glove size.

The Individual Beauty of Indigo Yarn

Indigo Paisley TeeIndigo refers to the several species of Indigoferra, an herb famous for the natural blue colours obtained from its leaves and branches. Blue is the most rare of all natural dyes. The wide appeal of indigo stems from the subtle variations in colouring it produces. Every indigo-dyed garment has its own personality. This is the result of a complex series of chemical reactions between the dye and the fibre being dyed.

Indigo was well loved by ancient Indians and Egyptians. In early European societies, blue dye was obtained from the woad plant that grew extensively in what is now France and England. When defending their territory against Roman soldiers, the early Britons painted their faces blue to scare the enemy. In fact, the word "Briton" means "painted man." Eventually, the more superior indigo dye of India replaced European woad.

Widely used since the Middle Ages, indigo has left its mark on societies as diverse as the fiercely independent, nomadic Tuareg, the so-called blue men of the Sahara, and colonial Louisiana, where indigo was king until it was usurped by cotton. In the 1800's, indigo was brought into modern society with the development of synthetic dyes. Chemist Adolf Von Baeyer first synthesized indigo, changing the textile industry and earning a Nobel Prize.

The power and symbolism of indigo blue continued into modern times. Coats supplied by the French to American soldiers during the Revolution were dyed with indigo. As the new country expanded and found its own identity, the blue jean-dyed with indigo-became a symbol of American individualism.

As a modern industrial process, there is still an art to the production of high-quality indigo dying. We're proud to bring you only the world's best, authentic indigo-dyed garments. Indigo yarns now make it possible to bridge the gap between jeans and active sportswear with what is now the 'alternative denim.' As an indigo yarn garment is worn and washed it will fade and take on the attractive patina of well-loved jeans.
