All my reels, and I mean ALL my reels, are either UK or US made, which, sadly, means I hadn't bought a new reel from Orvis for a few years. I am SO pleased with the quality of design, materials, and workmanship of the new CFO that I may now be able to start accumulating new CFOs to add to all the CFOs and Battenkills I had managed to accumulate over the years. Really a nice, nice, nice return to a standard of tradition and quality that, for your most loyal flyfishing customers, didn't really require you to go offshore in the first place. Thank you for this beautiful new American-made CFO reel.
Beautiful CFO #1 fly reel -

I presently have all generations of the Orvis CFO reel but I must say the new one made in USA is the very best by a wide margin. Beautifully machined, beautifully fitted, very light weight.---it easily rivals Peerless and other high end click and pawl fly reels. I will get another in the #2 size soon. We do need to have some spare spools for these reels though.
wonderful reel -

I just purchased all three sizes and love them all. Could even be better than the original! But..we need to be able to get spare spools. That would make this the perfect reel series.
Great reel -
The new CFO is the best ever. The quick change spool is easy to remove, but we can't get spare spools. WE NEED SPARE SPOOLS.
Not a versatile investment -

An American made CFO reel is a long overdue and highly desirable reel to match perfectly with an American made Orvis Impregnated bamboo fly rod (vintage or modern). What a combination to make a quality heriloom to be treasured for generations. Unfortunately, this new CFO reel is not being offered with an option for spare spools. This significantly limits the versatility of this reel. Who wants to invest this much per line type that they regularly fish? Purchasing multiple reels that cost this much is ridiculous. This needs to be addressed if you want to sell these reels. What a disappoint, ent!
Still my favorite -

I have three CFO's. I have other reels, too. After 40 years, the feel and handling while fishing the water can't be beat. And durable, too. They take a beating and keep on going like the old Timex watch commercial.
CFO III -

My first "New CFO" had a quality control issue that Orvis posted for me on an earlier thread. They replaced it with another New CFO and it is a great reel. Very nicely built and it holds a DT 5wt with plenty of backing. I fish it on a 8'6" Jim Reams bamboo and it complements a very nice rod. I want to thank Orvis for making things right and for producing a very nice reel.
Premium Fly Reel -

I have wanted a CFO reel for as long as I have been flyfishing (34 years)and this reel exceeds all expectations, plus it's American made. The precision craftsmanship is outstanding and it is a reel to hand down to my grandson.

I am an experienced user of previous Orvis CFO fly reels, including the bar stock spring-and-pawl, the disc-drag version and the limited edition of the 1972 original. I purchased the latest USA-made CFO II sized reel, setup for brook trout and panfish, with a Hydros Superfine 3wt line and backing. Fishing manager Dan at the Orvis store in Clarendon, Virginia provided great advice and over-the-top service during my purchase. First impression – Orvis and Abel have crafted a technically strong, aesthetically beautiful reel in terms of fit, finish and use. Every component of this reel is well-made and everything functions as it should. The foot mates snugly with any reel seat, the spool removal is easy, the drag is smooth, simple to adjust and has a good range, and the sound is great. Noteworthy features – the drag knob is beautifully machined metal (as opposed to plastic on previous CFOs), the finish is hard anodized and should prove to be very durable, and the case is well-padded with a flap-over Velcro closure that protects the reel on or off the rod (excellent!). Even the box makes a great presentation and instruction booklet is packed with useful set-up, maintenance and warranty information. Good price to value for such a high-quality reel. Highly recommended.

Short Version: Pros – Made in U.S.A. (ABEL), Classic Stanley Bogdan reel design, Size III has good line capacity, Click and Pawl is very smooth and not noisy at all, High workmanship, Beautiful Cosmetics, “You get what you paid for”, I definitely would buy it again as it is simply incredible Cons – No Large Arbour Long Version: The CFO reel in its different varieties and makes is one of the best trout fishing reels ever made. For me it´s also the best looking one of all classic fly reels. I must say that the quality of my bronze- toned ORVIS "Made in China" CFO III Disc is good. Finally. But as an honest fly fisher man I also have to mention that it took ORVIS three (!) exchanges to fix the issues with the lettering flaking off (they had to change to laser engrave them) and the bad quality of the disc brake system of the first reel. So it is flawless now and I want to thank the good people from the ORVIS headquarter at Vermont again, that they finally solved all the issues directly from the U.S. that I had with this reel make. Nevertheless, also when looking at the reel box, it always somewhat disappointed me to see that ORVIS had them made in China instead of England (HARDY Bros. or BRITISH FLY REEL BFR) where it once came from. I think other customers are like me. I also have the feeling that ORVIS knew that by moving the production to Asia they had screwed up a (if not the) classic trout reel. The recent “Limited Edition HARDY CFO Reel, Click and Pawl, Made in England” comes to mind here. But this reel unfortunately is not available in Europe from ORVIS.CO.UK. Also I find the price a little prohibitive. So when I heard that ORVIS discontinued the China made CFO version and instead launched an American made line of CFO pawl drag trout reels, it was clear for me to buy one. Also I bought the reel not only because of its beauty through a reputable ORVIS dealer, Duerkop Full Service Fly Fishing, Germany. I bought it to show a quality depending company like ORVIS is, that customers will honour when they go back with the production of a high-end product like a good fishing reel to where it should be. The reel itself is flawless as you would expect it to be when it comes from ABEL/ Made in the U.S.A. I would say that even the HARDY click and pawl system was not as smooth as this new one. The sound is like the one from a smooth disc drag system. It also nicely complements my SUPERFINE Graphite rods and my new SUPERFINE Glass 4 wt rod that I love so much. I ordered the size III as to me this is the only decent diameter for the line weights 4 and 5. I hope that maybe one day ORVIS will offer one model in a line size or better two larger, maybe with a disc drag again. The colour is what ABEL would call “slate”. The laser engraving and all the machining is of higher quality compared to what any CFO reel had before. I would have liked it even more if the engraving on the reel would look like the old style they now use to inscribe their Superfine Glass rods. If you are looking for a classic fly reel for trout fishing that is very well made and extremely honestly priced you should consider this reel. It is the best made out there. I would give 20 stars for workmanship and the very nice and smooth click and pawl drag system.
