Fly tying is creative, highly rewarding and wonderfully fun activity to share with friends and family. Whether you want to catch fish on your own flies or just enjoy the craft side of fly dressing, this 3-week course will introduce the tools, materials & techniques needed to tie your own flies.

All sessions of our Fly-Tying School offer the same content but with seasonal twists. All ages & abilities are welcome - under 18s are more than welcome to attend the Orvis Fly Tying School, however they must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian.

All equipment, materials and refreshments are provided.

School Location: Stockbridge, Hampshire

Summer School: Sunday 25th May, Sunday 1st June, Sunday 8th June 2025

Autumn School: Sunday 12th October, Sunday 19th October & Sunday 26th October 2025.
Please note: due to the time of year, our Autumn School will focus on flies for Grayling.

PROGRAMME

10:30 - Arrive and meet your host at Orvis Stockbridge. Tea, coffee and refreshments provided.
10:45 - Instructor led fly tying.
12:30 - Tie things off and take home your hand tied flies.

Week 1: Introduction to basic fly-tying tools, materials and skills.
Meet your instructors and get familiar with vices, tools, hooks, threads, materials and techniques before carrying out thread control and whip finishing practice. Then complete the session by tying flies using tools, materials, and techniques discussed during the session.

Week 2: Moving up a level and introducing new materials and techniques.
Starting with a quick refresher on thread control and whip finishing before moving on to tying flies which start to incorporate more materials and techniques. Opportunities for revision of techniques will always be offered.

Week 3: The culmination of study - flies that test your talents.
The big one. Now that students should feel confident in their ability to start and complete a fly satisfactorily we move on to more detailed flies which will test the newly acquired skills. By the end of the session each student should feel confident they can tackle most fly tying situations.
