National Orvis FF201: Learn to Fly Fish on the Water
When you are ready for the next step, having completed our FF101 class, either at Orvis Stockbridge or one of our national events, you are eligible to participate in our FF201 hosted excursion to a beautiful stillwater, and the chance to catch your first fish on the fly!
Our FF201 session includes:
- safety,
- choosing tackle and flies,
- fish habitat,
- entomology (the science of insects),
- knot tying,
- fishing etiquette,
- how to read the water,
- how to cast,
- how to play, land, and release a fish.
Lunch is not provided so please bring a packed lunch and any drinks you may need for the day with you, along with a hat and sunglasses (polarised are recommended) and weather-appropriate clothing. We also recommend bringing waterproofs and suncream in case either is needed.
Booking is required. Although there is no age limit, attendees need to be able to engage in the whole session independently. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

10:00 - Meet and greet at the agreed location
Throughout the day
Get an overview of fishery and the fishing etiquette on site
Habitat, entomology and fly selection
Casting your fly rod – on grass and water. Overhead cast, roll casts and shooting line.
Line retrieving and control
Reading the water and stalking fish
Playing, landing and handling fish safely
Time to fish!
15:30 - Weigh in fish caught and complete catch returns
16:00 - Wrap up
