Saltwater Essentials
With thousands of miles of coastline to choose from, saltwater fly fishing is one of the most accessible types of fly fishing in the UK. However even with the ease of access for most, there can be uncertainty over where to start when it comes to your kit.
To answer some of those questions and to help you get into the salt this summer, we went to our expert guide team for help. Colin Macleod, Michael Rescorle and Rodney Wevill have shared with us their ideal rod & tackle set-ups depending on the species of fish you want to target, to give you the best chance of success!
For a more in-depth discussion behind their choices check out these Three Expert-Approved Setups for UK Saltwater Fly Fishing over on Explore Orvis.
Colin Macleod: Mullet Essentials
"Following many years of trial, error and a little success, I have arrived at what I would describe as the ideal mullet outfit. The rod should be a 9 feet 6 weight and of a fairly fast action to counter the strong winds which often accompany a day in the salt. Two rods which fit the bill perfectly are the Helios D and the Recon."

Michael Rescorle: Bass Essentials
"My first fly outfit was a budget one with a double taper line, and while I had tremendous fun catching Rainbow and Brown trout, and my first bass with it, faster action rods with Weight-forward lines were needed to meet the demands of casting heavy flies in saltwater conditions."

Rodney Wevill: All-Rounder Essentials
“It doesn't matter if I am fishing open coast or estuaries, I tend to sight fish and fish close, I also fish smaller pattern flies, shrimp, crabs and the odd clouser or small bait fish patten and with a modern 6 weight set up gives me enough power, a nice light feel and tippet protection.”
