This course is run on the world famous River Test on our flagship beat at Kimbridge. The beat is a 1/3 mile of single bank fishing with interesting shallows and a bubbling top pool. Our instructors will help you master everything from setting up the rod, to fly selection and knots, to how to safely catch and release your fish.

We will cover:

  • Fly casting techniques
  • How to play, land and safely release fish
  • How to read the water and currents
  • How to choose your tackle
  • Stream entomology & selecting the right fly
  • Essential knots

Day One

Assemble, welcome address and introductions.

Your Quarry – The Noble Trout

• Habitat
• Requirements including food, oxygen, cover
• Senses, vision, vibration, lateral line
• Identification – brown, rainbow

The Overhead Cast

• The mechanics of the overhead cast
• Demonstration by your instructor
• Tackle up
• Practice your overhead cast, with tuition and guidance from your expert instructor

Roll & Side Cast

• The mechanics of roll and side casting
• Demonstration by your instructor
• Practice your roll and side casting, with tuition and guidance from your expert instructor

Coffee and discussion

Stream Entomology

• Use of seign and dip net
• Taking separate samples, and identifying families
• Life cycle of insects on the stream, including the all-important mayfly
• Show representative artificials

Knots

• Four turn water knot
• Improved tucked half blood
• Self cutting ability, wind knots

Leaders – learn about different leaders and how they’re used

• Knotless tapered
• Braided
• Loop to loop join
• The metrics of a leader and what significance they play - X number, diameter, braking strain
• Tippet

Fish Location

• Oxygen, water flow, food, cover, station
• The "Rise"
• Why polarised glasses are best for fishing
• Observing the fish – their shadows, tail movement, whites of the mouth
• Food flows, surface collection, obstructions

Fishing Etiquette

LUNCH

Fishing Methods – including both the theory and demonstrations from you instructor

• Downstream and across
• Speed of your swing, mending your line, “on the dangle”
• Upstream dry fly – fishing against the current of the stream
• The strike or lift
• Playing a fish, side strain, keeping the fish upstream
• Netting and releasing a fish

Issue of tackle, flies, leaders etc.

Tea & round-up of the weekend - Weigh-in and record your catch. Your certificate will be issued, and a group photo taken to remember your weekend.

Any time of the season can be good.

When does the school start and end? What will we be doing and how long will be fishing?

All equipment and instruction.

Is accommodation included?

No, but we will be delighted to advise on accommodation locally.

How many people will be attending?

A maximum of 8 with two qualified instructors.

What is the cancellation policy?

30 days notice is required to ensure that your deposit it refunded. However, late cancellations are taken on their merit.
