A standout memory from last season's guiding?
Any day on the beach or the riverbank is memorable, but two events stand out. The first was a day with Warren Horne, who had travelled from New Zealand for a holiday and wanted to catch some bass. One afternoon, he had a short window, and the weather and tides worked in our favour, so he landed a couple in a two-hour session while his wife explored the New Forest. The other was guiding a client to his first-ever grayling on the river Itchen. It weighed in at 2 lbs 4 oz—a PB which may last several years.

As the new season begins, what are the conditions looking like on your local rivers?
The rivers Test and Itchen are overflowing, which augurs well for the season ahead. The conditions for new and experienced chalk stream anglers should be excellent, so here’s hoping that the fish play ball. Looking to the saltwater environment, last season was blighted by bad weather and low numbers of all fish species, especially bass, so the hope is that results will be much better in 2025.
Are there any new gear or techniques you’re looking forward to testing or recommending to your clients this season?
I have been banging on about maximising Fly in the Water Time (FITWT) for years. It’s all very well trying to perfect a double haul using ten false cats, but until the fly is in the water, it will catch nothing. It is possible to cast a fly, even a heavy saltwater one, 20 – 25 yards with one or two false casts and getting everyone to achieve that will be a major aim for 2025.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to anglers planning their first fly fishing trip of this year?
The weather is a factor for a good day fly fishing so it is essential to check the conditions not only for the intended date but the ones leading up to it. Heavy rain can colour river water and make things near impossible. Strong winds along the coast can sometimes make for demanding and even dangerous conditions. Check the forecast and adjust plans accordingly.

Can you share a personal goal or something special you’re looking forward to this year—a dream catch, a conservation effort, or an unforgettable client experience?
I had the privilege of guiding 90 clients last season, and with over 100 on the books for the one ahead, I am determined to give them all a great day—a proper Orvis day—enjoying the outdoors and engaging in the wonderful sport of fly fishing. A fish or two would make it even better.
