Mustang Survival Join the Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival as Official Safety Sponsor

One of the things we love most about UK saltwater fly fishing is the coastline it takes us to. From South Coast shingle banks to tidal harbours and estuary creeks, these are beautiful but ever-changing environments that demand respect, preparation and an understanding of the conditions around us.

That is why we are proud to welcome Mustang Survival as the official safety sponsor of the Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival.

For decades, Mustang Survival have developed flotation and safety equipment trusted by anglers, rescue professionals and mariners around the world. While our festival is entirely shoreline based, rather than boat focused, we believe conversations around safety are just as important for anglers fishing on foot.

The coastline around Chichester Harbour and Hayling Island offers some incredible fishing opportunities, but it also presents unique challenges. Large tidal ranges, mud, soft ground, slippery weed-covered surfaces and rapidly changing weather conditions are all part of fishing the south coast safely and responsibly.

Many areas are only fishable for short periods around high tide, and some sections of shoreline can become hazardous very quickly. We strongly encourage anglers to fish in pairs where possible, carry a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, and always make someone aware of where they are fishing and when they expect to return.

Throughout the festival weekend, attendees will also receive a dedicated safety briefing from the Hayling Island RNLI team. Their local knowledge and experience operating around these waters is invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.

The briefing will cover practical considerations including:

  •  Understanding tides and changing conditions
  • Safe wading practices and recognising hazardous ground
  • Fishing safely during dawn and dusk sessions
  • Cold water awareness and suitable clothing
  • Emergency procedures and communicating your location effectively
  • Respecting restricted areas, wildlife habitats and other shoreline users

We are also excited that the Mustang Survival team will be joining us in person throughout the festival weekend. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the team, learn more about their approach to water safety, and see their specialist angling safety equipment up close.

A selection of customised Mustang Survival products, including inflatable belt packs and lifejackets, will also be available through the festival pop-up shop. For shoreline anglers covering long distances on foot, lightweight flotation options can offer an appealing balance between comfort, mobility and preparedness without interfering with casting or wading.

Importantly, safety equipment is only ever one part of the picture. Good planning, awareness of tides and weather, fishing within your limits and looking after each other remain the foundations of safe saltwater fishing.

At Orvis UK, we believe responsible fishing and stewardship go hand in hand with enjoying time on the water. We are excited to work alongside Mustang Survival and the Hayling Island RNLI to help make this year’s festival not only memorable, but safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone attending.

We look forward to welcoming anglers to the south coast this summer for a weekend celebrating UK saltwater fly fishing culture, community and adventure.
