As trout season kicks off, we caught up with Orvis Endorsed Guide Stewart Collingswood of Alba Game Fishing to get his insights on what to expect this year. With Scotland's notoriously unpredictable weather and river conditions, Stewart is hopeful for favourable water levels to support a successful smolt migration and productive fishing throughout the season.
Join us as Stewart reflects on last season’s standout memories and shares his excitement for the adventures that lie ahead this year.

As the new season begins, what are the conditions looking like on your local rivers and stillwaters?
“Scotland is so unpredictable with river levels and weather, I’m just praying we have good water in the rivers to enable a successful smolt migration and hope that we have good conditions throughout the year for both migratory and brown trout fishing.”
Are there any new gear or flies you’re looking forward to testing or recommending to your clients this season?
“I’ve just got a hold of the new Helios - 10ft 4 weight and very much looking forward to giving this a good run on the rivers next week.”
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to anglers planning their first Scottish fly fishing trip this year?
“Book early, we are 75% booked for the season, and already having to turn a lot of people away. In addition, the best hotels get booked early too, so in summary, plan at least 6 months in advance!”
Can you share a personal goal or something special you’re looking forward to this year—whether it’s a dream catch, a conservation effort, or an unforgettable client experience?
“I’ve got many great guests coming this year on mixed fishing and touring vacations, but I’m especially looking forward to a couple I am taking to Harris, Lewis and Shetland. I know some amazing trout lochs there and the scenery is majestic. That aside, it’s been a long winter and a lot of admin, I can’t wait to get out and about again in the fresh air. Finally, I’m excited (as always) for the April dry fly fishing for brown trout on the Tweed and Deveron.”

What is one of your standout memories from guiding last season?
“I had a high-profile guest over for 8 days and we had a couple of tough days with weather and high water. On the final day we were fishing a river in the Highlands and I asked if he was prepared to link arms with me (for safety) and wade over to an Island to access a pool that is seldom fished. We took 20 minutes to get over safely and then landed around 7 or 8 big trout ranging from 40 - 50cm…all beautifully marked and returned safely. Caught some on dries on a bamboo rod. It was also the first time he had tried nymphing and the first time he had cast a bamboo rod. It was so memorable seeing the excitement and enjoyment he had and a great way to end the trip.”
