Delve into our Q&A with Julian Tucker, passionate angler and friend of Orvis UK, who has attended the Orvis Beginners Saltwater Weekend and Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival each year and keeps coming back for more.
1. You've been to every Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival since it began — what keeps bringing you back year after year?
Every year, it's like a reunion of sorts, a chance to reconnect with friends I’ve made over the years at previous festivals. There’s always a sense of community that makes the whole experience really special. It’s not just about the fishing, though that’s obviously a huge part of it. It’s the swapping of stories, picking up new tips and tricks and just soaking in the atmosphere. Plus, getting the chance to fish in such an incredible setting with such passionate people is something I genuinely look forward to.

2. Is there anything about the overall experience, beyond just the fishing, that really stands out to you?
Definitely the camaraderie. There’s this brilliant sense of togetherness throughout the event. Sure, for some it’s a bit of a competition, but honestly, it never feels that way. Everyone’s so supportive and encouraging, it creates an environment where even total newcomers feel welcome. I really love that you’ve added a junior section, seeing younger anglers getting involved and being nurtured into the sport is just fantastic.

3. A lot of people might not realise how much is actually included in the ticket price — what would you say to someone who’s considering coming for the first time?
It’s honestly such great value for what you get. The ticket includes expert-led teaching sessions, hands-on coaching and two really fun evening socials where the food and drink are completely covered. This year, Weber UK Chefs are even coming to cook on the beach for everyone that attends the Night Station, also included in the ticket, what could be a better way to spend an evening.
The Orvis x YETI® Night Station adds a fun twist and having experienced guides around to help, instruct, and offer advice is invaluable. When you compare it to what you'd pay for a day’s rod on a decent river, it’s a total bargain. For anyone thinking about coming, I’d say go for it. You’ll get more than your money’s worth and have a brilliant time doing it.

4. How have the workshops or guided sessions helped you improve over the years?
They’ve had a huge impact on how I fish, especially in terms of technique and confidence. My casting, for one, has come on leaps and bounds and I still remember Charles Jardine teaching me how to double haul properly, which was a game-changer. Then there are the sessions with Colin Macleod, that eventually led to me joining him on an incredible trip to Cuba to chase bonefish, something I never imagined I’d do! The workshops also really help sharpen your overall saltwater “craft”, things like understanding tides, reading water, being aware of safety, all the small things that add up to make a big difference.
5. Do you remember any particular tip, moment, or bit of advice you picked up at a workshop that really stuck with you?
Absolutely. One thing that really stuck with me was something Joe Walker said during one of his sessions: he told us that 90% of fish are within 10–15 yards of where you’re standing. That was a lightbulb moment. So many anglers get caught up trying to launch long casts, when actually they’re often missing what’s right in front of them. It completely changed the way I approach it and now I focus much more on accuracy and observation close in, rather than wasting time and energy on distance.
