As the temperatures drop and the rivers clear, winter brings a change not only in conditions but in the way fish behave, and that means adapting your fly box. To help you make the most of the colder months, we asked Damien from our Orvis Stockbridge store to share a few of his go-to winter patterns. With years of experience fishing the local waters, he knows exactly what’s likely to turn a slow day into a memorable one.
Grayling Special
A classic fly at this time of year for grayling, a crossover shrimp pattern with a hint of pink that all the ladies love. This one will work well until mid-November.

KJ CDC Red Tag
A lovely grayling fly with a trigger take. The orange tail and CDC give the fly movement in the water column, making it great in coloured water. A consistent performer from mid-November through to February.

Dougie’s Roach and Perch Patterns
Both excellent pike flies that imitate the mainstay of a pike’s diet. The yellow of the perch pattern, in particular, can induce takes, especially when there’s a little colour in the water.
