A bright, sunny day welcomed 25 young anglers from Jubilee School in Waterlooville and Dibden Park School in Dibden Purlieu to Lakedown Trout Fishery for a special fly fishing event hosted by Angling Mentors.
Alongside 15 experienced fishing mentors, participants spent the day learning the basics of fly fishing, including casting, fly tying, water safety, and fish spotting, gaining hands-on experience and confidence in the sport.
Angling Mentors, a not-for-profit organisation, is dedicated to inspiring and supporting young people to connect with nature and enjoy the many benefits of fishing. Many of the students attending have been identified as having social, emotional, or physical challenges, making the experience an important opportunity for learning, teamwork, and personal development.

Shane Davies, from Angling Mentors, said: “Although no fish were caught, the incredibly hot and sunny conditions didn’t stop the young people from trying, learning, and enjoying themselves. There were plenty of near-misses and hands-on moments, giving them a real sense of achievement and excitement for future fishing adventures. I’ve seen their patience grow, witnessed lots of social interaction, and, above all, seen countless smiling faces, making it a truly successful day. Events like this are at the heart of Angling Mentors’ mission.”
Aaron Rawling, Managing Director at Orvis UK, said: “Fishing offers unique benefits for the young people here today, many of whom haven’t had the easiest start in life. Finding a positive outlet is so important, and this time spent outside on the water gives them a chance to switch off and focus solely on nature. At Orvis UK, we are committed to supporting initiatives like this that inspire the next generation of anglers, promote outdoor learning, and provide life-changing experiences through fishing.”
Jamie Daltrey, General Manager at Lakedown Trout Fishery said: “We were thrilled to welcome the young anglers and mentors to Lakedown Trout Fishery for this special event. Donating the venue was our way of supporting such a positive initiative. Seeing so many young people learning new skills and enjoying the outdoors made it a truly rewarding experience for everyone involved.”
