A Guide to Orvis Men’s Clothing Fit and Sizing
We design and build our men's clothing to accommodate an active, outdoors lifestyle. In addition, we build plenty of “wearing ease” in all our men's garments to ensure you will enjoy them for many years. We do extensive field testing on many of our offerings and take into consideration how the clothing will be worn. For example, when we fit men's outerwear, we always size it with the appropriate layers beneath. That means you do not need to order a size up for a comfortable fit.

- Classic Fit: Our most relaxed shirt fit offers more ease through the body, shoulders, and sleeves and is longer in body length.
How to Measure
In all instances, hold tape firm and level, but not tight. Because size measurements can vary dramatically across the marketplace, it can be hard to know your best fit. Our Customer Service experts are here to help.
- Neck Circumference: Wrap tape around to the base of your front neck and allow room for wearing comfort or measure the collar length of a favorite shirt.
- Sleeve Length: From the center back of your neck with your arm slightly bent, follow the tape around to your wrist bone.
- Chest: Wrap a tape measure evenly around the fullest part under your arms.

Men's Hats
Your hat should fit securely, but not tightly—if you shake your head back and forth vigorously, the hat should stay put. The same goes for bending forward; if you bend down, your hat shouldn’t slip off. Make sure that your hat doesn’t bind or pinch. If it does, we recommend you exchange it for the next larger size.
HAT SIZE | HEAD SIZE | |
---|---|---|
Small | 6¾ - 6⅞" | 21⅛ - 21½" |
Medium | 7 - 7⅛" | 21⅞ - 22¼" |
Large | 7¼ - 7⅜" | 22⅝ - 23" |
X-Large | 7½ - 7⅝" | 23½ - 23⅞" |
XX-Large | 7¾" | 24¼" |
How to Measure
Using a cloth measuring tape, measure around your head at the point at which your hat normally rides (approximately 1" above your ear). If your measurement is between two hat sizes, order the larger size. If you do not have a cloth measuring tape, you can use a piece of ribbon or string to measure round your head and then use a ruler or metal measuring tape to find the length.
