Tackle Tune-Up: Get Ready for Your Next Adventure

By Scott Rutherford, Orvis Associate & Endorsed Guide

As anglers, we all know the joy of being out on the water, casting our lines, and waiting for that tug. But, before heading out on your first trip of the season, it’s a good idea to give your tackle a little love and attention. A quick tune-up ensures everything's working smoothly, and you’ll be better prepared to reel in that big catch. Here’s a simple checklist to get you sorted!

1. Refill and Reorganise Your Fly Boxes

Your fly boxes are your arsenal, and if they’re running low on your most-used flies, it’s time to restock! Take a moment to refill your fly boxes, organizing them by type and size. Whether it’s nymphs, dries, or streamers, having a well-stocked and organized box means you won’t waste time searching for the right fly when the fish are biting.

2. Clean and Check Your Fly Lines

Your fly line sees a lot of action, so give it a proper cleaning before your trip. Soak it in some warm water with a tiny bit of mild dishwashing liquid to remove dirt, grime, and any built-up residue. This will keep your line smooth and improve its casting performance. Just rinse it thoroughly afterward and let it dry. Whilst cleaning, look out for any cracks, cuts or damage and replace the line if it’s through to the core.

If your line has AST or AST+, Scientific Anglers Fly Line Cleaner has been specifically designed for it - and as a bonus, it's biodegradable formula works with all fly lines.

3. Check Your Rod

Your fly rod is your trusty companion, so make sure it’s in top shape. Inspect the rod joints, guides, and cork handle for any signs of wear or damage. A cracked guide or a loose ferrule could cause problems down the line, so it’s always best to catch any issues early. If you spot any damage, it might be time for a repair or replacement.

4. Reel Maintenance

Your fly reel needs a little TLC too. Check for any signs of damage or rust and ensure the drag system is working smoothly. If your reel has been sitting idle for a while, give it a proper cleaning and lubrication to ensure it runs like a dream when you hook into your next big catch.

5. Replace Your Tippet and Leaders

Tippet and leaders are the unsung heroes of your setup. If your spools of tippet/leader are getting low or have seen better days, replace them before you hit the water. Don’t forget to swap out any worn or well used tapered leaders. Having fresh, strong tippet and leader will give you confidence, especially when you're after those elusive fish.

Essentials to Keep in Your Pack

Once your tackle is sorted, it’s time to check your gear bag. Here are a few essentials you don’t want to forget:

1. Sling Pack

Being organised and having everything you need to hand is essential to a successful day on the water. Our Sling Pack is designed to store, organise, and offer easy, intuitive accessibility while staying completely out of your way when fishing. The integrated Tippet bar holds up to 6 spools and the main compartment is large enough for spare spools, fly boxes and your lunch. The exterior storage includes a water bottle holder and retainer whilst the front strap offers multiple docking stations for forceps and small tools.

2. Zingers and Nippers

Over time, zingers and nippers can get worn out or break. Before you head out, replace any that aren’t functioning properly. These small but vital tools are essential for keeping your forceps close at hand and your leader trimmed just right.

3. Floatant Gel, Powder, Renew

Floatant is key when it comes to keeping your dry flies on top of the water. Whether you use a gel, powder, or paste, make sure your floatant is in good condition and that you have a fresh supply. If your current bottle is looking a little low or dried out, it’s time for a new one.

4. Amadou Patch for Drying Delicate Flies

An Amadou patch is a handy tool for drying out delicate flies, like CDC or any that might get waterlogged quickly. It helps keep them dry and floating longer, which is essential when you’re in a good fishing spot and don’t want to waste time drying flies on your shirt.

5. Fuller’s Earth (Mud)

Fuller’s Earth is a great way to degrease your leader so it sits below the surface. If you use it, make sure you’ve replenished it or rehydrated any that has dried out. A fresh batch will keep your flies floating high and dry throughout your day on the water.
